Making a
Difference in a Child’s Life
What is a
Foster Parent: When children and parents must be separated,
the children may be cared for by an agency-approved foster
caregiver. The Ohio Department of Human Services requires each
foster caregiver be certified. The intent of family foster homes
is to provide a safe nurturing family for the child while the
parents address the difficulties that led to the separation.
While in family foster homes, children may receive counseling,
help with behavior problems, and assistance with special health
or learning needs.
What is an
Adoptive Parent: Children available for adoption come into
permanent custody of Fairfield County Child Protective Services when a
court determines that their birth parents cannot care for the
child’s present or future needs. These children may have been
abused, neglected, or abandoned. Fairfield County Child
Protective Services is the public adoption agency for the county. Adoption
is the method by which adults become legal parents of a child
not born to them.
How do I Become
a Foster Parent: All foster homes are licensed by the Ohio
Department of Human Services in cooperation with Fairfield
County Child Protective Services and are recertified every two years.
Prospective foster parents must complete training and have a
completed home study.
How do I Become
an Adoptive Parent: All adoptive homes attend 27 hours of
training. After completion of the training, a certified adoption
assessor is assigned to conduct a homestudy; which includes
several in-depth interviews with the prospective adoptive
parents and any children living in the home.
